Ely Area Capacity Enhancement debated in Parliament
We’re grateful to Charlotte Cane MP for raising the Ely Area Capacity Enhancement scheme during yesterday’s Parliamentary debate (3 December). The debate echoed what Transport East, England’s Economic Heartland and our partners have consistently highlighted: Ely is critical infrastructure for both freight and passengers – not just for the East, but for the entire nation.
We also want to thank Adrian Ramsay MP for reiterating the urgent need to upgrade Haughley Junction in Suffolk, a vital element of the wider scheme to increase rail capacity from the Port of Felixstowe to the Midlands and the North.
While we were disappointed that the scheme was not included in the Spending Review earlier this year, we welcome reassurance from DfT Minister Lilian Greenwood that Government continues to recognise the significant benefits the scheme can deliver. It is clear the importance of this investment is well understood – and that is encouraging.
Our thanks as well to Charlotte Cane MP and Lilian Greenwood MP for recognising the role of Transport East and England’s Economic Heartland in bringing partners together and building a strong, evidence-led case for this vital investment.
The message from across the sector is clear: this scheme is essential to unlocking growth and opportunities across the region and beyond.
We stand ready to work with Government to progress and deliver the rail capacity our region – and the UK – urgently needs.
