BERTIE is an Agent Based Modelling platform to provide transport insight in the East

Developed with ARUP, BERTIE (BEhaviouR & Transport: Impact & Equity) is a powerful tool which provides valuable data across multiple transport modes to help Transport East answer questions, test assumptions, and generate insights that reflects the real-life choices people make about how they travel.

This will help the region make better decisions for the East's future transport needs.

BERTIE shows the road and public transport networks within the East and joins them together to allow agents to make fully multimodal trips. A trip joins two locations and can comprise multiple legs, where each leg might use a different mode.

The map below demonstrates how BERTIE displays the current transport options and links within the East.

We tested several different scenarios to show a range of possible outcomes on top of the 2040 base model. We looked at:

  • EV uptake: to look into the most likely and best-case uptake levels for the population and the implications for transport beyond carbon reductions
  • Active mode improvement: to understand what happens if we boost the attractiveness of walking and cycling
  • Changing the cost of driving: to understand who would be most impacted by any changes and what mitigations may need to be considered
  • Combination scenario: which let us combine all the above to see what the impact of multiple policy changes would have

Running a large number of highly detailed simulations within BERTIE leads to a wealth of insights which can help shape our Transport Strategy and support local authorities make effective decisions.

If you have any questions about the transport insight BERTIE has or can provide, please contact us.
