Government move gives councils greater powers to tackle pavement parking and improve safety for people walking and wheeling
Pavement parking can make journeys really hard for people walking – especially for people with disabilities affecting mobility, those with visual impairments, and those with pushchairs.
Government has announced that local councils will be given new powers make it easier to put in restrictions on pavement parking across wider areas. This decision follows a previous Government public consultation on the issue and new guidance will follow later this year.
Under the new approach, local leaders will be able to decide where to take action on pavement parking in their area, while retaining flexibility for where they deem pavement parking may still be acceptable.
Walking and wheeling are the most common ways to make short journeys, and everyone should feel safe doing so without pavements being obstructed. We are pleased to see the Government are making it easier for local authorities to implement changes that will benefit many communities and will be keeping an eye on how this new legislation progresses, and the impact it will have for our region.
