Southend hosts innovative autonomous bus as regional transport leaders gather to discuss future investment for the East
Transport East and Southend-on-Sea City Council welcomed senior regional transport leaders on Thursday 18 September, as the Transport East Board and members visited the city to see first-hand how investment in cycling and new technology is shaping urban transport.
Attendees experienced a demonstration of an electric autonomous shuttle, developed by Ohmio Lift sparking discussions about how emerging technology could be incorporated in other areas across the East.
The shuttle can accommodate 15 people in total, but currently has a maximum seated capacity of eight, with a safety driver, has advanced sensors for obstacle detection, back up safety systems and is fully wheelchair accessible.
This was followed by a tour, led by Bikeability, along Southend’s growing network of cycle lanes to the seafront and iconic Southend Pier. Along the route, guests explored the Better Queensway Project – a flagship regeneration scheme reshaping the city centre, improving public spaces and supporting sustainable travel.

The visit underlined how Transport East is working with local authorities and partners to champion investment in sustainable transport and emerging mobility solutions, helping communities across Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock benefit from cleaner, more reliable and inclusive travel options.
