£8.5m in Government funding to boost local transport delivery across the East

The Department for Transport has confirmed £8.5 million of resource funding for local transport authorities in the East between 2026 and 2029. This investment, part of a wider £104 million package announced nationally, is intended to help councils develop and deliver ambitious transport plans that improve everyday journeys.

This funding aims to facilitate the delivery of the £135 million in local transport grants awarded in June, which is designed to progress schemes that make travel faster, more reliable, and more sustainable – improving public transport, supporting walking and cycling, and reducing congestion.

A breakdown of resource funding is below:

Local Authority Allocation (£m)

Essex County Council, 3.2

Norfolk County Council, 2.1

Southend-on-Sea City Council, 0.7

Suffolk County Council, 1.8

Thurrock Council, 0.7
