Response to Lower Thames Crossing receiving development consent
The announcement that the Lower Thames Crossing has received planning consent from the Secretary of State for Transport, provides clarity to all partners in the East. It will now be subject to a 6-week window for a judicial review to be lodged and we await government confirmation of the funding approach.
The nationally significant scheme aims to reduce traffic congestion on strategic routes by taking over 13 million vehicles away from the Dartford Crossing every year and can support economic growth to the wider region and nation.
We welcome National Highway’s commitment to low-carbon construction techniques and the work opportunities the construction can provide for thousands of people and businesses in the local area.
We encourage National Highways to work with Transport East and Local Authorities to ensure connections for freight accessing the Thames ports and Freeport are enhanced, and to explore how the new tunnel and connections can be used to support sustainable travel modes, such as new bus services.
