Making the case for enhanced rail connections between Clacton-on-Sea and Colchester
Transport East has published new research setting out the opportunity to double rail services between Clacton-on-Sea and Colchester, delivering two trains per hour throughout the day along this important corridor.
The work, developed as part of our Shorter-Term Opportunity Report, brings together evidence from extensive engagement with partners including Greater Anglia, Network Rail, Essex County Council, Tendring District Council and Colchester City Council.
Currently, Clacton-on-Sea and local stations along the corridor see infrequent services. Some local stations lack a regular, direct rail service to Clacton-on-Sea, Tendring District’s largest town. This infrequency means passengers have less flexibility when making journeys, resulting is rail travel being less attractive than travelling by private vehicle.
Despite the availability of rail, only 1-2% of all journeys along the Clacton – Colchester corridor is made by rail. Reliance on car use has also contributed towards high levels of urban congestion in both urban areas.
Doubling the all-day frequency along the corridor could deliver significant benefits for local communities. Many areas in this part of the region have lower than nationally average levels of income, employment, education and health outcomes. These service changes could improve access to vital services that impact everyday lives, while contributing towards net-zero goals and reducing road safety concerns.
To deliver these ambitions, we will continue to collaborate with local regional and national partners. As a partnership, we can align these enhancements with regional development, housing strategies and economic opportunities to maximise return on investment. This achievable short-term opportunity can transform everyday travel on the Colchester–Clacton corridor and support overall growth and prosperity in the region.
