Active Travel England publishes Rural Design Guide
We welcome the publication of Active Travel England’s first Rural Design Guide, which provides local authorities with practical steps to design safer, high-quality, and connected walking, wheeling, and cycling routes in rural communities. Our Rural Mobility Centre of Excellence has worked closely with ATE to help develop this guidance, showcasing examples of good practice from across the East.
The guide covers key areas of scheme delivery, including routes along busy roads, quiet mixed-traffic lanes, safe crossings and junctions and integrating these routes with new housing developments and connecting them to public transport.
With 1/3 people in the East living in rural areas, this guidance is a game changer for providing better active travel options. It will help deliver plans so rural residents can safely make short everyday journeys, whether they are walking to school, travelling to local shops, or connecting to bus and rail services.
