We aim to make our roads safer, more efficient, and resilient for all users. Well-maintained roads are a valuable asset, and regular upkeep is essential.

To get the best value from road improvements, we will target areas where upgrades will be most effective. These projects will also include better options for walking, cycling, wheeling, and public transport. Additionally, new technology can help manage road space more efficiently.

Who Manages Our Roads?

Road management and improvements in the East are handled by two main authorities:

• National Highways: Responsible for the Strategic Road Network (SRN), which includes the biggest and busiest roads.

• Local Transport Authorities: County and unitary councils manage the local road network, covering everything from country lanes and residential streets to important A-roads not managed by National Highways.
